How do I update my address with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)?
You must update your address with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) if you have recently moved to California or even if you have just moved within the state. Your new address will be reflected on your California driver's license, ID card, vehicle registration, and vehicle title as a result of this action.
How do I update my contact information with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)?
If you move within California, you must notify the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within 10 days. It is free to update your address with the CA DMV, and you will not need to obtain new documents with your new address. Your new address will appear on your renewed California driver's license/ID card as well as your vehicle registration.
You can update your address in three ways: online, in person, or by mail.
Online
Unless you do the following, you cannot update your address online:
- You do not have a California driver's license or identification card.
- I lack a Social Security number.
- Have a commercial driver's license (CDL) from California but live in another state.
- Have a military or naval post office address.
- Have a non-US mailing address.
- If any of the above apply to you, you must update your address either in person or by mail.
Register for the CA DMV's online services to update your address online. After registering, you can log in and begin the online address change process. If you own a vehicle, you must provide your old address, new address, and vehicle registration information. You can log back in after 72 hours to check on the status of your address change.
In Person
You can also update your address in person by bringing a completed Change of Address (Form DMV 14) to your local CA DMV office. The form is available online, at a California DMV office, or by calling (800) 777-0133. If you call and request a form, you will receive it in about 5 days.
By Mail
You can also change your address by mail if you prefer. Completed Change of Address (Form DMV 14) should be mailed to the address listed on the form. Fill out a small piece of paper with your new address, sign and date it, and keep it with your California driver's license or ID card. It should not be taped or stapled to your card.
How do I change my voter registration address in California after moving?
If you are a California voter who has moved, you can have the DMV notify the California Secretary of State of your new address. When you update your address with the California DMV, you can select this option. If you prefer to change your voter registration address yourself, you must re-register with the California Secretary of State.
What are the driving requirements for new California residents?
If you have recently relocated to California from another state, you must complete the following tasks:
- If you intend to drive, you must apply for a California driver's license within 10 days.
- You must title and register your vehicle in California within 20 days if you own one.
